Begin 2014 verscheen bij Harmonia Mundi de laatste twee pianosonates van Beethoven met violiste Isabelle Faust, cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras en pianist Alexander Melnikov. Dit (door de muziekpers zeer gewaarde) album, wordt vervolgt met alle werken voor cello en piano van Beethoven. De eerste twee sonates schreef Beethoven in 1796 voor de muziekminnende Frederik Willem II van Pruisen (neef van Frederik de Grote). Voor het eerst gaf Beethoven de cello en piano een gelijkwaardige rol. De overige drie sonates schreef hij in 1808 en 1815. Bijzonder zijn de variaties gebaseerd op melodieën van Mozart (Die Zauberflöte) en Händel (Judas Maccabaeus). Dit album bevat ruim twee uur subliem uitgevoerde muziek, dat aanrader is zowel qua composities als de uitvoerenden absoluut een aanrader is.

Beethoven’s works for cello and piano were written between 1796 and 1815. He effectively created the sonata for cello, with an independent piano part, in his Op.5, intended for Jean-Louis Duport and dedicated to Frederick William II of Prussia. Like the delightful variations on themes by Handel and Mozart, they represent his first-period style, as Op.69 typifies the second. The two sublime Sonatas Op.102, for their part, already herald the unprecedented stylistic freedom of the composer’s final decade.
