Bij Wagner denkt iedereen meteen aan opera en terecht. Toch schreef Wagner ook werken voor symfonieorkest en piano solo. De eerlijkheid gebiedt te zeggen dat zeker die pianowerken zich niet kunnen meten met zijn opera’s, zo blijkt ook op dit album. De twee korte stukken van Wagner worden overvleugeld door de bewerkingen die Liszt, Pesson, Wolf en Jael maakten van Tristan und Isolde, Rienzi en Die Walkure. Wilhem Latchounia speelt ze ietwat onderkoeld, waardoor aan de titel Extase Maxima geen recht wordt gedaan, maar juist Isoldes Liebestod is gebaat bij deze meer afstandelijke benadering.
