In juni is het 150 jaar geleden dat Richard Strauss werd geboren. De Nederlandse Opera brengt op dit moment Arabella. Thomas Hampson – die deze dagen de rol van Mandryka in een Salzburgse Arabella productie zingt – is tevens een begenadigd liederzanger. Voor dit album maakt hij een persoonlijke keuze uit de ruim 200 liederen, die Strauss vanaf zijn zesde tot aan zijn tachtigste schreef. Deze achttien liederen zijn gebaseerd op teksten van verschillende dichters en kennen een rijke variatie aan stemmingen en emoties. Bijzonder is het vrijwel onbekende Notturno opus 44, dat Strauss voor een lage stem schreef. Samen met vaste pianist Wolfram Rieger levert dit een boeiend album op, met een vioolsolo van Daniel Hope in Notturno.
