Een impromptu is een meestal voor piano geschreven muziekstuk dat improvisatorische elementen bevat en vaak een vrije vorm heeft. Gebaseerd op een muzikaal idee dat in de compositie nader uitgewerkt wordt. De vorm stamt uit de romantische periode waarin componisten op zoek gingen naar nieuwe en meer persoonlijke uitdrukkingsvormen. Shai Wosner presenteert een programma met louter impromptus. De ongekroonde koning van deze muziekvorm is natuurlijk Schubert. Meesterwerkjes op zich en van een drietal hiervan is het smullen op deze CD. Deze Schubert juweeltjes vormen ook zondermeer het hoogtepunt van dit voortreffelijke album. Maar ook Chopin doet een duit in het zakje met een tweetal pianistische hoogstandjes. Een gelukkige keuze van Wosner is ook de ten onrechte niet zo vaak gespeelde magnifieke Fantasy in G Op.77 van Beethoven.

After his wonderfully quirky and highly praised Haydn & Ligeti album, Shai Wosner returns to solo piano repertoire for his next project. As always with this artist, there is something very different on offer - Impromptus by Chopin, Dvorak, Liszt, Gershwin, and Schubert rub shoulders with Beethoven's Fantasy Op.77 - the nearest thing we have to a Beethoven 'improvisation'. The composer did indeed improvise this work at a private house performance, then went home and wrote it down from memory! Ives's Improvisations 1&3 round off an eclectic programme.
