Tot 1967 leunden The Beach Boys louter op het talent van Brian Wilson. Met Pet Sounds werd een creatief hoogtepunt bereikt dat in de VS pas jaren later begrepen werd. Wilson ging nog verder met Good Vibrations en het project Smile. Tijdens de opnames van die plaat stortte Wilson in en werd een mentaal wrak geplaagd door overgewicht. De band probeerde zich weer op te richten met de albums Smiley Smile, Wildflower en Friends doch commercieel succes bleef uit. Capitol dumpte de band en het eigen Big Brother label werd opgericht. De eerste twee platen op dat label werden Sunflower en Surf's Up. Beide albums kenmerken zich door de constant hoge kwaliteit en het feit dat alle leden nu bijdragen aan het songmateriaal. En er werd veel en veel meer opgenomen zoals nu blijkt ut de voorbeeldige box Feel Flows die de jaren 1969-1971 in kaart brengt. Naast beide platen bevat de 5CD box namelijk een schat aan materiaal waarvan 108 niet eerder uitgebrachte tracks. Daaronder veel opnames uit de album sessies, maar ook live-opnames, radiospotjes en alternatieve versies. Het onuitgebrachte Big Sur is slechts een van de vele hoogtepunten uit deze box en laat andermaal horen dat The Beach Boys ook na Pet Sounds/Smile veel meer prachtig en niet te onderschatten werk hebben gemaakt.
