Het klarinetkwintet van Brahms (1833-1897), gecomponeerd in 1891, zit ingeklemd tussen een hypermodern werk voor soloklarinet uit 1982 van Salvatore Sciarrino (1947) en een gangbaarder werk voor klarinet en strijkkwartet uit 1998 van Gérard Pesson (1958). Omdat je de programmering hier als een grote muzikale boog zou kunnen beschouwen, ontkom je er eigenlijk niet aan dit album (altijd) in zijn geheel te draaien. De inzet van Brahms z'n klarinetkwintet sluit qua subtiele intensiteit mooi aan op het werk van Sciarrino met zijn ijle klanken en op zijn beurt sluit het werk van Pesson mooi aan op het verstilde slot van het klarinetkwintet. Bij Brahms nemen het Finse strijkkwartet Meta4 en de Zwitser Reto Bieri, onderling prachtig in balans, de luisteraar als vanzelfsprekend mee in de muzikale beweging en dat geldt ook voor het werk van Pesson.

Reto Bieri’s solo album Contrechant, released in 2011, was widely praised for the Swiss clarinettist’s beauty of tone and his uncommon expressiveness with extended instrumental techniques.
His latest recording on ECM New Series, Quasi Morendo, begins with a new exploration of one of the pieces featured on Contrechant, Salvatore Sciarrino’s Let Me Die Before I Wake (1982), with its “whisper-quiet sound world of harmonics, multiphonics and tremolandos” (The Guardian).
Bieri is then joined by Finnish string quartet Meta4 for a profound interpretation of Johannes Brahms’s Quintet op 115 (1891). Inspired by Brahms’s friendship with clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld the quintet sounds freer, and more idyllic, than the composer’s earlier chamber music, yet is one of his most meticulously constructed works. The album closes with Gérard Pesson’s Nebenstück (1998), a ghostly re-arrangement of Brahms’s Ballade, Op. 10 No. 4.
