Songfestivalliefhebbers weten natuurlijk meteen dat David vooral de voorman en zanger is van Maneskin, de Italiaanse rockers die in Rotterdam tot winnaars werden gekroond. Met zijn eerste solo album wil David vooral afrekenen met alle angsten die hem blijkbaar al jaren bezighouden, van hoogtevrees tot podiumangsten. Hoewel hij nog steeds aan de stevige kant van het spectrum zit, is de aanpak hiervan een stuk poppier dan met Maneskin. En hoewel Maneskin toch al kon rekenen op een hoop succes en volgelingen, lijkt hij met Funny Little Fears op nog wat meer fans te rekenen. De aanstekelijke popliedjes, van dit overigens Engelstalige album, zijn net stevig genoeg en net avontuurlijk genoeg om ook nog serieus over te komen, waarmee hij zich in ieder geval een beetje lijkt te willen meten met Harry Styles. Een prima debuut derhalve, waar de songfestivalfans zich uitstekend in zullen vinden en waar de rockliefhebbers ook nog genoeg plezier aan kunnen beleven. (Jurgen Vreugdenhil)
