In navolging van de succesvolle series voor piano en voor viool is Hyperion gestart een serie Romantische celloconcerten. De Duitse cellist Alban Gerhardt is de uitdaging aangegaan en speelt werken uit de vergetelheid. Zo ook werken van Wilhelm Fitzenhagen. Deze Duitse cellist/componist werd professor aan het conservatorium in Moskou. Hij ontmoette Tchaikovsky die de Rococovariaties aan hem opdroeg. Fitzenhagen wijzigde en schrapte in de partituur en maakte er zo zijn eigen versie van. Gerhardt haalt alles uit zijn cello om de stukken tot hun recht te laten komen.
