Inmiddels nadert de band Deep Purple ook met rasse schreden de respectabele leeftijd van 60 jaar. Wie het tourschema van de band bekijkt ziet echter nog geen signalen dat de band het rustiger aan gaat doen. Ook qua nieuw studiomateriaal zit de band niet stil en brengt het met Splat! alweer album nummer 24 uit. Volgens de bijgeleverde bio keert de band met dit album terug naar de tijden van Smoke On The Water en Highway Star en is het het stevigste album in tijden. Opener Arrogant Boy gaat inderdaad vlammend van start en zet de toon voor een album waarop de band aantoont dat er nog steeds geen sleet zit op de beproefde formule. Tracks als The Rider, The Only Horse In Town, Third Call en Diablo passen moeiteloos in het reeds omvangrijke oeuvre. Persoonlijk zit dit album voor mij in de hoogste regionen van hun album ranglijst en mag het gerust gezien worden als hun beste werk in jaren. Heerlijke ronkende gitaren, gierende orgelpartijen en een energiek klinkende Ian Gillan maken dat dit een album is wat nog vele rondjes gaat krijgen. Fans kunnen dit blindelings aanschaffen maar het gaat hen op hun oude dag zeker nieuwe fans opleveren!! (Emiel Schuurman)

Deep Purple announce the release of their new album in 2026, titled SPLAT!

With more than 120 million albums sold since the band’s formation in 1968, Deep Purple have long held a special place in rock history. But rather than simply preserving their legacy, they continue to expand it, driven by the same spirit that has defined them since their earliest work.

Frontman Ian Gillan says: “Where we are now with this incarnation of Deep Purple feels very much like a very ‘now’ version of Deep Purple as it was in the seventies.”

On SPLAT!, the band has once again teamed up with acclaimed producer Bob Ezrin (KISS, Pink Floyd, Lou Reed, Alice Cooper). Together, they have created an album that draws on the sound and attitude that have always set Deep Purple apart from the rest.

The album is their heaviest in many years and was recorded with the band playing together in the studio — the way Deep Purple have always recorded: “I have to say, now we are very much back in with material that is compatible with ‘Highway Star’, ‘Smoke on the Water’, ‘Lazy’ – the dynamics, the balance, and the fun of the music we made from ‘69 to ’73,” says Ian Gillan.

At the core of SPLAT! is an idea conceived by Ian Gillan. Rather than viewing the end as destruction, the album imagines it as a transformation: SPLAT! explores the end of humanity not in any crude, apocalyptic sense, but as a metamorphosis beyond physical existence.
