Recensie

Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan’s sophomore album Sunday at Devil Dirt is a dark, cinematic masterpiece that perfects their "beauty and the beast" dynamic. Released in 2008, the record abandons the sunny pop sensibilities of Campbell’s Belle and Sebastian days, opting instead for a haunting, gothic Americana atmosphere. Campbell’s ethereal, whispered vocals serve as the perfect foil to Lanegan’s gravelly, whiskey-soaked baritone, creating a tension that feels both romantic and deeply menacing. The songwriting leans heavily into murder-ballad folklore and dusty, cinematic blues.

The opener "Seafaring Song" sets a eerie, maritime tone, while the driving rhythms of "The Raven" and "Come On Over (Turn Me On)" infuse the album with a sultry, swamp-rock swagger. Campbell handles the production and arranging masterfully, layering acoustic guitars, classical strings, and subtle brass to create a rich, cinematic landscape that sounds like a soundtrack to a lost Quentin Tarantino western. While their debut Ballad of the Broken Seas felt like an intriguing experiment, Sunday at Devil Dirt sounds like a fully realized world. Lanegan sings with the weary authority of a ghost-town preacher, and Campbell plays the role of the haunting specter with chilling precision. It stands as a brilliant exercise in sonic contrast, delivering an addictive, moody listening experience that lingers long after the final track fades.
