Met Bliss levert Temples zijn vijfde album af en tegelijk misschien ook zijn definitieve transformatie. Van de Byrds-achtige psychedelica van debuut Sun Structures is nauwelijks nog iets over. Gitaren zijn er nog wel, maar diep weggestopt onder synths, beats en een productie die groots en fysiek klinkt. De tien songs zijn echter nog altijd even catchy als in de beginjaren. Meer nog: Bliss is dansbaar tot in de vezels. Desnoods dans je in je hoofd. De bulderende bas, de pulserende ritmes en de steeds verder uitdijende zang van James Bagshaw trekken Temples richting het domein waar ook Tame Impala zich thuisvoelt: psychedelica als totaalervaring. Opener ‘Jet Stream Heart’ zet meteen de toon. Het begint met een alarmsignaal en verklankt de sensatie van de fysieke ervaring met beats en bas als je dichtbij de luidspreker staat. Euforie en melancholie liggen tien liedjes lang voortdurend dicht bij elkaar. Voorganger Exotico bleef vreemd genoeg grotendeels onopgemerkt. Dat lot zal Bliss vermoedelijk niet treffen. Temples’ name has become synonymous with a band with an adventurous spirit; constantly exploring new ideas.

On their fifth album, BLISS, they shake up the perception of the Kettering-formed four-piece with a record that ventures into electronic territory while staying true to their core DNA. Euphoric and melancholic melodies of late ‘90s dance music blend with psych-tinged riffs and loops to create something fresh.

Though the band missed the late ‘90s rave culture firsthand, BLISS channels that era’s bittersweet euphoria, drawing inspiration from Faithless, Underworld, Prodigy, Air, Röyksopp, Moby, Massive Attack, Orbital, Portishead, and more. Psych and dance share a natural lineage, with repetition, loops, and trance-like states forming the album’s foundation
