Onheilspellend, dat is hoe het nieuwe album van de band uit Leeds begint. Er wordt woest op een koebel geslagen, trillende basgitaren rommelen en zanger James stelt zichzelf ontelbaar veel existentiële vragen, zoals How deep is the ocean really? en What’s wrong with doubting yourself?. Toch wordt op het einde van Empty Pledges het album over een compleet andere boeg gegooid. Is er dan toch nog wel hoop? Daar lijkt Yard Act zelf ook niet uit te zijn. Met vrolijke tracks als New Beginnings, Over The Barrel & Tall Tales, gevuld met catchy Indierock riffs, lijkt het de goede kant op te gaan. Maar de gure wind blijft loeren, met de zware Redeemer en de chaotische Thrill Of The Chase. Is een beetje muziek genoeg om dit wereld te redden? Ik ben bang van niet. Kan het album You’re Gonna Need A Little Music je in ieder geval meenemen in alle verschillende emoties die een nieuws-lezend mens op een dag kan doorlopen? Van frustratie naar ontkenning? JA! Having initially captured our ears with “The Trapper’s Pelts”, we’ve been eagerly following the Leeds quartet ever since, hungrily gulping down their swift-witted lyricism and inventive, ever-evolving approach to indie rock.
Now, finally able to dedicate the time and energy into crafting the album that they always wanted to make, Yard Act have thrown their all into album number three, enlisting producer extraordinaire Justin Meldal-Johnsen (Nine Inch Nails, Beck, St. Vincent) to help fine-tune these 11 diverse and ingeniously crafted tracks — each of which will be claiming serious real estate in your heads in the months to come.
Yard Act may have previously been searching for their utopia but, like the soothsayers they are, they recognise that it’s music that will be our mutual salvation.
