he “Voyager” 7" by PJ Harvey is released on Partisan and serves as a striking first signal from her next artistic phase; it is her first new music since the Grammy-nominated 2023 album “I Inside the Old Year Dying.” The single was conceived in parallel with Harvey’s work on the forthcoming album, but was further developed at the request of Professor Brian Cox, who commissioned it for his tour “Emergence.”
For the production, Harvey traveled to Miraval Studio in Provence, where she recorded with a full orchestra; the orchestral accompaniment was arranged in consultation with Dario Marinelli. “Voyager” takes its title from the NASA probes launched in 1977 and translates the idea of the signal into musical motifs: swelling string textures and pulsing synthesizer signals create a vast, almost cosmic soundscape that remains cool and ethereal while never losing its clear human dimension.
Lyrically, PJ Harvey grapples with our vulnerability in the universe, moving from the notion of the “pale blue dot” to images of snowflakes and motes of light; within these images she quotes Carl Sagan and offers a quiet invitation to choose light and love.
