Zoals we van filmregisseur Baz Luhrmann gewend zijn, is ook zijn nieuwste film over Elvis Presley er één vol spektakel: kleurrijk, flamboyant, flitsend en met een snelle opeenvolging van scenes. Hoewel Luhrmann niet schroomt om historische gebeurtenissen naar zijn hand te zetten, is dit niet storend en past het prima in de verhaallijn van de film. De soundtrack geeft een vergelijkbaar beeld, waarbij je als luisteraar heen en weer wordt geslingerd tussen (originele en bewerkte) nummers van Elvis en muziek van Eminem, Jack White, Maneskin, Cee Lo Green, Kacey Musgraves en andere hedendaagse bands en artiesten. Ook zijn een aantal songs te horen met zang van Austin Butler, de Australische acteur die niet alleen in de film de rol van Elvis overtuigend weet neer te zetten maar ook de zang van The King goed weet te benaderen. Zo bieden de 36 albumtracks van de soundtrack een nogal opmerkelijke mix van muzikale genres, maar is het een aanpak die – evenals de film – verrassend goed uitpakt.
