Recensie

Dexter Gordon (1923 - 1990) was a giant in every respect. Both his stature and his playing exuded authority. He had the power to draw conclusions from many musical impressions and said/played things as they were without regard to the opinions of others. He was one of the first tenor saxophonists to play modern jazz in the big band style, which made him a source of inspiration for many.

On July 15, 1979, he performed at North Sea Jazz with his backing trio of pianist Kirk Lightsey, bassist Rufus Reid and drummer Eddie Gladden. On this album you can hear their performances of 'It's You Or No One' and 'More Than You Know'. The album also includes a recording of the tenor battle that took place later that evening during 'Flying Home' with Hank Jones on piano, Gene Ramsey on bass and Gus Johnson on drums, as well as Dexter Budd Johnson, Illinois Jacquet, Arnett Cobb and Buddy Tate Sound on saxophone.

Following the Ella Fitzgerald album, this is the second release in the "North Sea Jazz Concert Series" presented late last year by Bertus Distribution in collaboration with NTR, AVROTROS and MOJO. This is a new vinyl series of live recordings of legendary artists from across the decades, recorded at the renowned North Sea Jazz Festival.

The "North Sea Jazz Concert Series" will include officially licensed releases, released as standard on 180 gram white vinyl in a heavyweight paper sleeve and on reverse printed card. The records will be captured by Hans Pol in his signature black and white artwork inspired by the covers of classic older jazz releases, such as those from the Blue Note label. The liner notes are written by journalist and jazz expert Jeroen de Valk. For all recordings, this is the first release on vinyl ever!
