Met zijn tweede plaat ‘Before I Lose It’ laat Melle overtuigend horen waarom hij tot de meest oprechte stemmen van de Nederlandse indiepopscene behoort. Het album klinkt intiem en persoonlijk, alsof hij de nummers rechtstreeks voor de luisteraar speelt. De zachte en bijna breekbare zang staat in scherp contrast met teksten die flink de diepte in gaan. Melle omarmt bewust imperfectie onverwachte instrumenten, rauwe klanken en hoorbare foutjes blijven intact op de plaat en versterken de emotionele lading van het album. Thematisch beweegt ‘Before I Lose It’ zich tussen het persoonlijke en het maatschappelijke. Liefde, zelfbeeld en identiteit vormen de kern, maar Melle schuwt ook onderwerpen als ongelijkheid, kapitalisme en discriminatie niet. Nummers als ‘Easy to Love’ en ‘DNA’ laten horen hoe kwetsbare, persoonlijke verhalen moeiteloos samengaan met bredere observaties, zonder zwaar of belerend te worden.
