The rustle of a Super 8 camera, the drowsy tones of a pedal steel, a voice like a cloud of pink sheep, with thunder quietly lurking underneath. Romy Liz Rose (Romy Laarhoven) knows how to make it sound like eternal summer. An eternal sad girl summer, that is.
Her debut album I Am June is a coming-of-age record about transformation and the moments when you no longer fully recognize yourself, for better or worse. The album captures the atmosphere of June: a month in which everything opens up, light and movement take over, and new possibilities begin to feel within reach. Each song carries a sense of anticipation, as if it could point toward a new direction. In that way, I Am June becomes a reflection on growth, turning points, and the redefinition of self.
As a songwriter, Romy Liz Rose draws inspiration from artists like Joni Mitchell and Adrianne Lenker, yet somewhere on the horizon, almost like a mirage, a touch of country emerges. Suddenly, you find yourself in a mahogany rocking chair, gently swaying with her music between euphoria and longing, between indie, folk, and Americana.
I Am June was written in Romy Laarhoven’s living room and completed in the studio together with producer Jesse Koch.
