Recensie

In 1984, when I was fourteen years old, I was a clarinet student at Conservatory. I played the clarinet with great desire. I loved its timbre and appearance. But I was very jealous of my friends who played violin, cello and oboe in one respect: they could play Bach.

As you know, the clarinet is not a baroque instrument. That’s why there are no Bach pieces for the clarinet, though there is one for the oboe. At one point, I even considered changing departments and switching to oboe so that I could play Bach.

During my student years, I had a chamber music teacher named Alain Boeglin. He would share the notes in his library with us students. In his classroom library, there were many contemporary composers’ pieces as well as chamber music pieces that we hadn’t known before. One of these was an adaptation of J.S.Bach’s Trio Sonata No. 1 (BWV 525), written for solo organ, two clarinets and a bassoon. I played this piece by Bach in my very first ‘formal’ chamber music concert, which I organized outside of school. The success of this concert gave me confidence. I had never felt the range of emotions I felt in Bach’s music from any other composer before.

Years later, when I heard this piece in its original form on the organ at a concert, I remembered it again. I thought about how impressive and universal Bach’s music is and how much I missed playing Bach. Right then and there I decided to make a program consisting of Bach’s works that incorporated the clarinet.

But this was not an easy decision. The clarinet has a special timbre. For this reason, I did not find every Bach piece suitable for the clarinet. I did not know which instruments I would use. There were no arrangements for clarinet and piano. I did some research, experimented with different instruments, and finally decided to go ahead with clarinet, piano and cello.

The positive feedback we got during our first concerts with the trio increased my motivation even more. I decided to make an album so that this dream program of my youth would become permanent.

I would like to thank everyone who supported me and contributed to the ‘Bach on the Clarinet’ project.
