En alweer een pareltje van de hand van the Alchemist! De gelauwerde producer uit Californië heeft deze keer Hit-Boy als zijn protegé, na succesvolle albums met Larry June, Armand Hammer en onlangs Freddie Gibbs (“Alfredo II”). Hit-Boy & Alchemist, in eerste instantie een duo dat ik niet snel bij elkaar zou zoeken, maar op ‘Goldfish” bewijzen ze het tegendeel! Heerlijke (verrassend) soulvolle producties en de introspectieve, beschouwende lyrics zorgen ervoor dat dit album een heel appetijtelijk geheel is geworden waar de rechtgeaarde HipHop-liefhebber zijn spreekwoordelijke vingers bij aflikt! Er valt veel te genieten en daar waar veel nieuwe HipHop-albums tegenwoordig een aaneenschakeling zijn van guest-appearances (soms wel vier op één track!), zijn de gastbijdragen op dit album op één hand te tellen. Conway, Boldy James en Havoc (Mobb Deep) leveren stuk voor stuk bescheiden bijdragen die perfect passen. Maar de grootste verdienste van ‘Goldfish’ is de wisselwerking tussen Hit-Boy en Alchemist. Ze halen het beste in elkaar naar boven. Het melancholische ‘Ask For Me’ is hier een mooi voorbeeld van, net als ‘Home Improvement’ en het bloedmooie ‘God Is Great’. Ja, wellicht hebben we hier een ruwe diamant te pakken die bij velen in de jaarlijstjes terecht zal komen. Smullen! (Dirk Monsma)
