‘Happy Today’ begint als ’n uitgesponnen, ritmisch klankexperiment met galmende gitaar en mooie akoestiek rondom drums en bas. Na 7 minuten meldt zich de vrolijk tsjirpende saxofoon: is het lente? Musical hiking om gelukkig van te worden.
‘Like Swimwear’ is heel anders: funky gitaarspel met modal jazz elementen op saxofoon, samen in een uptempo duet. Live, het publiek doet actief mee.
Een mooie concertregistratie.

Happy Today is the third album from guitarist/bandleader’s Jeff Parker’s long-running ETA IVtet, recorded live at Lodge Room in Los Angeles on August 20, 2025. This fresh entry into the IVtet’s catalog captures the instantly recognizable group sound of Parker and the band—including drummer Jay Bellerose, bassist Anna Butterss, and saxophonist Josh Johnson—on record outside of the now-shuttered Highland Park micro-club ETA for the first time ever.
Recorded live at Lodge Room in Los Angeles on 20 August 2025, "Happy Today" finds Parker, drummer Jay Bellerose, bassist Anna Butterss and saxophonist Josh Johnson exploring two side-length improvisational pieces with their signature minimalist approach. The lead track "Like Swimwear (Part One)" is available now.
The album emerges from a difficult period that saw Parker and his family displaced by the 2025 Eaton fires for eight months. The title reflects a moment of joy and community amid hardship. A concert film documenting the recording premieres in April and May before an official 29 May release, while the quartet celebrates with California shows in August, including three nights at Lodge Room (23-25 August).
