EARL SWEATSHIRT & MIKE & SURF GANG

Een dubbelalbum van twee namen die opvallend vaak in de luwte blijven. Dat is vreemd, want met hun authentieke geluid zijn zij verfrissend in het tegenwoordige HipHop-landschap. Earl Sweatshirt loopt best wat jaartjes mee sinds zijn debuutplaat ‘Doris’ uit 2013 en hij blijft opvallend productief. Afgelopen najaar bracht de uit Chicago afkomstige MC nog zijn laatste, door kenners bejubelde, wapenfeit ‘Live Laugh Love’ uit en nu dus dit project met MIKE. Laatstgenoemde met de kenmerkende luie flow, soms bijna ongeïnteresseerd klinkend, heeft de afgelopen jaren flink aan de weg getimmerd in de New Yorkse underground. De productie op beide albums is in handen van producerscollectief SURF GANG en zij hanteren op zowel ‘POMPEII’ als op ‘UTILITY’ een ietwat mechanisch klinkend geheel. Weinig plek voor nuance of zachte jazzy beats. Hierdoor kunnen beide albums wat kil overkomen waarbij Earl mij iets meer weet te overtuigen dan MIKE. Tekstueel is het voormalig Odd Future-lid een rapper die je als luisteraar altijd weet op te scherpen. Bovendien klinkt zijn flow en deliverance iets toegankelijker dan die van MIKE. Met 33 tracks is deze dubbelaar geen gemakkelijke kost, maar als je het album een paar luisterbeurten gunt, dan valt er genoeg te genieten. Voor de connaisseurs! (Dirk Monsma)

POMPEII // UTILITY unites two kindred spirit rappers from opposite coasts within SURF GANG’s world-building genius. Structured as a true double album — MIKE on one side, Earl on the other — POMPEII // UTILITY unfolds through a rotating cast of side quests and characters from within its shared creative ecosystem. Jadasea, Anysia Kym, Niontay, Na-Kel Smith, and Lerado Khalil all make appearances, passing through the album’s vast terrain, while behind the scenes, SURF GANG producers Harrison, EvilGiane, Elipropperr, and Flea Diamonds (with input from additional producers) wield the gritty, raspy, animated beats that build its container.
