MOS DEF

Your rapper’s favourite rapper…. Een titel die je vaak hoort als men het heeft over Mos Def (tegenwoordig bekend als Yasiin Bey). Hij zette zijn eerste schreden in de HipHop in 1995 als lid van de groep Urban Thermo Dynamics, om vervolgens naam te maken als onderdeel van het superduo Black Star (samen met Talib Kweli) eind jaren 90. In 1999 verpletterde hij de HipHop-wereld met zijn solodebuut ‘Black on Both Sides’ en met dat album legde hij de lat torenhoog voor zichzelf. Dit resulteerde in de jaren daarna dan ook in twee behoorlijk lauw ontvangen albums die ervoor zorgden dat de HipHop-liefhebbers zich terecht afvroegen of we de uiterst talentvolle lyricist ooit nog in zijn topvorm zouden meemaken… Mos Def begon zich steeds minder thuis te voelen in de muziekindustrie en hij stortte zich in die jaren ook op een acteercarrière.

Maar gelukkig gloorde er hoop aan het einde van de 00’s toen Mos Def zijn vierde album ‘The Ecstatic’ aan de wereld presenteerde. Door velen werd dit album gezien als de wedergeboorte van de extreem getalenteerde MC die men zo lang had gemist. Met hulp van producers Madlib, Oh No en J Dilla, claimde Mos Def zijn toppositie weer in de HipHop gemeenschap. Sociaal bewogen lyrics, zijn sterke delivery in zowel raps als zang, gemixt met invloeden uit jazz, Spaanse muziek, Oosterse muziek en poëzie, maken ‘The Ecstatic’ een waanzinnig HipHop-album dat zich zeker kan meten met zijn glorieuze debuut tien jaar eerder. De eerlijkheid gebied me te zeggen dat de Mos Def/Yasiin Bey van na ‘The Ecstatic’ me steeds minder heeft weten te overtuigen; met name zijn live performances zijn zelfs een flinke beproeving voor de doorgewinterde HipHop-junkie. Gelukkig kunnen we ons nu verlekkeren aan de vette reissue van ‘The Ecstatic’, want dat verdient dit album alleszins! (Dirk Monsma)
