Evergreens en standards, the Great American Songbook, het is voor veel muzikanten de basis van hun werk en de bron van hun inspiratie. Zo ook voor Benjamin Herman, de beste saxofonist en best geklede muzikant van Nederland. Onder eigen naam en met New Cool Collective bracht hij de afgelopen vijftien jaar een plaat of dertig uit met een veelheid aan stijlen. Een selectie met standards is echter alleen te vinden op Café Alto uit 1996, waarvan Café Solo het vervolg is. Samen met bassist Ernst Glerum en drummer Joost Patocka nam hij begin dit jaar acht klassiekers op, waaronder Summertime, Isfahan, Begin The Beguine en End Of A Love Affair. Het is een intieme plaat, waarop Herman de stukken ontspannen en virtuoos neerzet. Als toetje twee nummers die vorig jaar samen met pianist Miguel Rodriguez zijn opgenomen, wat de plaat een lekker swingend eind geeft.
Benjamin Herman:
“This album is special for me in the sense that I wanted the actual sound of my horn to be the focus on this album. Not chops or material. With just Ernst and Joost there’s so much space in the music. I had actually never tried recording an album this way. Joost and Ernst set up behind me and I leaned back in a chair (!), we recorded the first tune and it turned out lovely. We decided to stick to that for the whole session.
Once again kudos to engineer Joeri Saal at Studio 150. The old Studer reel to reel tape recorder and the studio’s jumbo collection of vintage equipment help but he is definitely the one doing the magic.”
