Toen Slayer in 2019 haar pensioen aankondigde, waren zij de eerste van de thrash Big 4 die ermee stopten. Inmiddels bestaat die band weer en is Megadeth de volgende van het clubje die het afscheid heeft aangekondigd. Middels een laatste album en een uitgebreide wereldtournee zal de band een laatste buiging nemen. Het titelloze slot album is in elk geval een schot in de roos. De 3 vooruitgeschoven singles Let There Be Shred, Tipping Point en I Don't Care gaven al een goed beeld van de koers die oer lid en enig overgebleven origineel bandlid Dave Mustaine ons hier voorschoteld. Het album voelt als een feest van herkenning voor de trouwe fans van de band. De herkenbare riffs en songstructuren maken dit een meer dan geweldige afsluiter van veertig jaar Megadeth. De heerlijke bonustrack die we krijgen mag natuurlijk niet onvermeld blijven. Een fantastisch bijtende versie van Ride The Lightning! De cirkel is rond!! Enjoy retirement Dave! (Emiel Schuurman)
Megadeth will bid farewell with a final album on 23 January 2026. An album that will simply be titled ‘Megadeth’, because what else can you say with an album that has to function as an end to four decades as a Monolith of thrash metal?
For fans, it will undoubtedly be a wistful goodbye to Dave Mustaine and company. But Mustaine himself reminds us that we should appreciate that Megadeth is ending on their own terms. Before they burn out. Before other circumstances put an end to them, as we have seen happen to other bands so many times before.
‘Megadeth’ is a worthy and virtuoso finale that could not have come at a better time. Alienation and division is ever-present in the world these days, but as a final action, Megadeth calls for unity and solidarity. This also applies to their subsequent farewell tour, where they plan to end in style and have their fans join them for concerts with happiness - not sadness - as the driving force.
