‘Nothing’s About to Happen to Me’, een merkwaardige titel voor een album waarop Mitski in meerdere nummers fantaseert over haar dood en soms zelfs op gruwelijke wijze wordt vermoord. Ze verlangt ernaar te verdwijnen in de anonimiteit en te ontsnappen aan de oppervlakkigheid ontstaan door technologie. Dit album is gemaakt om eindeloos opnieuw te draaien, om te verdwalen in Mitski’s beeldende teksten, doordrenkt van symboliek. Haar warme melancholische stem zingt met een haast spinnende vibrato. Als de kat die centraal staat op het album. Die symbool staat voor loslaten in de liefde, hoe wanhopig dat ook kan verlopen. (Liz Bosman)
Nothing’s About to Happen to Me is the eighth studio album by Mitski. All songs and vocals are by Mitski. The album was produced and engineered by Patrick Hyland, and mastered by Bob Weston, with assistance on drums and logistics from Kris Bulakowski.
Continuing the musical through line established with The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, the album features live instrumentation by the The Land touring band, as well as ensemble arrangements. The orchestra was recorded at Sunset Sound and TTG Studios, arranged and conducted by Drew Erickson, and engineered by Michael Harris, with additional engineering by Isaac Diskin and assistance from Alex Miller.
Standout singles include “Where’s My Phone?”, “I’ll Change for You”, and “If I Leave”.
Mitski is currently writing the music and lyrics for the musical adaptation of The Queen’s Gambit. Her concert film, Mitski: The Land, recently had its cinematic release in 27 countries, and was accompanied by The Land: The Live Album.
