Het moderne jazzkwintet ontstaat in 2012 in een jeugdclub in Londen. Na twee succesvolle EP’s brengt Ezra Collective in 2019 zijn eerste album You Can’t Steal My Joy uit. De eigen sound, een mix van jazz, afrobeat, hiphop, reggae, grime en soul, zet de band wereldwijd op de kaart. Inmiddels hebben Femi Koleoso (frontman en drums), TJ Koleoso (bas), Joe Armon-Jones (toetsen), James Mollison (saxofoon) en Ife Ogunjobi (trompet) de prestigieuze Mercury Prize en een BRIT Award gewonnen. Dit draagt bij aan hun doel om het elitaire imago van jazz te doorbreken. Toch halen de leden volgens Femi niet de meeste voldoening uit het winnen van prijzen, maar uit het teruggeven aan de jeugd, onder meer door les te blijven geven. Nu brengt Ezra Collective zijn vierde studioalbum Here Because Of Hope uit, waarin de vraag ‘Waarom klinkt zwarte muziek die uit pijn voortkomt toch zo vreugdevol?’ centraal staat. Het antwoord is hoop. Het album volgt in drie delen de reis van de Afrikaanse diaspora langs verschillende continenten, waarbij instrumentale tracks worden afgewisseld met nummers met toepasselijke features. Zo staat de Gambiaanse Pa Salieu op ‘Only Love’, is de Jamaicaanse Lila Iké te horen op ‘Well organised’ en horen we Leona Lewis op ‘All I need’ vanuit de UK. Het eindigt met Libianca, die volgens Femi ‘heaven’ vertegenwoordigt, omdat haar stem zo prachtig is. Dit kwintet weet met hun eigen geluid de dansvloer in de fik te steken. Ook dit album, met een heel persoonlijk, ambitieus en spiritueel karakter, weet die energie vast te houden. (Annabel Smeehuizen)
