HISAISHI, JOE

The vinyl release of Joe Hisaishi’s Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea: Image Album offers a delightfully playful, synthesizer-forward window into the musical concepts that laid the groundwork for Hayao Miyazaki's 2008 aquatic fairy tale. Originally recorded prior to the completion of the film's animation, this 10-track collection shows Hisaishi experimenting with a much lighter, digital pop palette before transforming these melodies into a grand, operatic orchestral score. Anchored by charming vocal performances and whimsical electronic arrangements, the album functions as an endearing, sun-drenched concept record that celebrates the pure imagination of early childhood.

On a turntable, this single-LP release from Studio Ghibli Records bursts with a warm, punchy clarity that highlights the playful nature of the production. Side A leans heavily into melodic character portraits and bright synthesizer instrumentation. Tracks like "Ponyo's Coming!" and the electronic march of "Fujimoto's Theme" bounce off the vinyl surface with a crisp, infectious rhythmic drive that sets a lighthearted, adventurous mood. The analog pressing separates the bouncy digital percussion from the gentle acoustic accents, allowing the bright, melodic synth leads to fill the listening room with immense warmth.
