Dat we vandaag de dag muziek uit de 14e eeuw kunnen beluisteren is vaak te danken aan monnikenwerk, letterlijk en figuurlijk. Helaas is veel muziek verloren gegaan, omdat de vastlegging verdween door bewuste vernietiging vanwege de niet meer toegestane inhoud of door brand. Bevlogen onderzoekers vinden nog steeds manuscripten in oude (kerk)archieven die met de nodige reconstructies leiden tot speelbare partituren. De Italiaan Antonio Zacara da Teramo componeerde geestelijke en wereldlijke muziek in de overgang naar de Renaissance en het Ensemble La fonte musica brengt zijn complete werk op 4 schijfjes onder de titel Enigma Fortuna. “Understand me whoever can, since I understand myself” schreef Zacara en dat lijkt me een mooie uitdaging.
