Bellini, Puccini en Verdi. Met de grote rollen in opera’s van deze componisten maakte Maria Callas faam, en het is toepasselijk dat EMI in het Verdi-jaar 2013 deze fraaie box uitbrengt met vier complete opera’s, allemaal live opgenomen in de jaren vijftig van de vorige eeuw: Aida, La traviata, Un ballo in maschera en Macbeth. Meer dan op latere studio-opnames is Callas hier op haar best: als dé dramatische sopraan van de twintigste eeuw, misschien niet technisch altijd perfect, maar wel met de meeste zeggingskracht.
